Those aren't yellow jackets. Yellow jackets are hornets and they nest in the ground. I have lived with lots of Polistes sp. wasps. They make open honey-comb nests and are beneficial. I've had them nest right over my front door and gotten along with them.
It sounds wonderful. I live in a small town in Nor Cal - there is a great deal of warmth and kindness in this town. People help each other out in that same way. GIves me hope for humanity.
Here in Georgia the Yellowjackets are in the ground. They have gotten me twice and they not only sting but they hang on. I got my termite guy to come and take care of them because I couldn’t find the nest.
I live in densely populated, coastal Orange County, California; and I have often pondered the possibility of life on a small farm in a small town. ( I have a decades-long yearning for chickens!) Thanks to your post today, I took a good look at where I live and realize my small town is my neighborhood. We, too, communally take care of wasp nests. We call one another when a garage door is open or a light is off or on at an unusual time. We take out each other's bins on garbage day and pull rogue weeds from neighboring landscapes as we walk by. We share extra cookies, zucchini bread, pernil , even wine.
The women in my neighborhood were born in four different decades, truly enjoy one another's company, and get together once a month to break bread and banter. We learn so much from one another.
This morning, after reading your newsletter, I finally have the eyes to see that I DO live in a small town, even though I have no chickens.
Thanks for this great comment, you made my day. One of my favorite quotes comes from Minnesota small town poet Bill Holm, “The heart can be filled anywhere on earth.” Raising chickens, however, may depend on your local zoning laws.
I like hearing the buzz around Superior.
We basically leave each other alone, but pitch in where needed. ❤️
The wasps and hornets probably say the same thing.
:)
Sounds like wasps. My credentials? 45 years with wasps loving to nest in the struts holding the canopy over our front windows.

Down here we have mud daubers. It looks like a clump of mud. Could it be that it keeps the wasps cooler? They are always high up by a door.
Pretty soon the city of Superior will have a population explosion. I hope your neighbors don’t blame you. 🤣
Well, the wasps probably like it too.

You are blessed, Kent. That sounds like a wonderful neighborhood!
This was very Waspy.

Wasps are insects too.
