Nice close up images of that Great Blue Heron. I agree with you on the naming conventions of wildlife - it's relative in comparison to something else and doesn't truly reflect the quality of the species. Common Raven, Common Goldeneye, Common Grackle...all a thrill for me to see - each and every time I see one.
I think Great Blue Herons secretly love the attention…..until they don’t, they’re such poseurs. We saw and heard loons on the Minnesota lakes during several years of summer fishing trips and in my younger days could do a pretty good loon call. I know nothing about how loons got into the State Department corridors at 2 am.
I've seen and heard a Loon. Well I do live in Britain. No,I saw one on a lake on Vancouver Island when I visited my cousin many years ago now. It was right at the end of the season when they all go north so this last straggler hadn't left yet so I got to see this iconic creature. I saw Bald Eagles too. Personally I agree with whoever it was thought the Turkey should be the icon of USA as being more unique and useful too. You can't eat Bald Eagles. But I guess Turkeys dont have noble associations to antiquity.
Maybe the reason he wasn't moving was because it was a great fishing spot, and we all know you never move from a great fishing spot, no matter how many pictures you take.
I believe the Great Blue Heron may be the supermodel of the bird world. This one looks like it's consciously giving you different poses to capture with your camera. "Fluff your feathers, darling." Love the stamps you've carved from the images of these beautiful creatures, too.
.. that’s just ‘your perception .. and a good one to hang onto - but the heron are ‘birds of prey & hunt/feed - dawn to dark - certainly ‘the largest birds I’ve ever seen in the wild - though wild turkey & Canada Geese are big ones too - and I forget ! The Pelicans ! Huge ! 🦎🏴☠️
Yesterday, at dusk, I watched grey louries in the trees outside my kitchen; they're also "common" birds here, but I stood for ages watching them. It brought me such joy. The magic of the everyday world just never gets old.

Slow down you move too fast, got to make the morning last. Kicking down the cobblestones, looking for fun and feeling groovy. Thanks for writing.

I totally agree that when you look close at anything you see how amazing it is. Wonders great and small are all around.
So great
This is great
Slow and steady wins the race.
Great stamps too.
Great bike, great tires, great pictures of great birds, and great article.
these are not ‘nice birds - they’re Apex Predators - & Multi Dimensional
The shots are exceptional.. ‘Heron Hunting .. not posing prettily or posturing
Have always been astonished by them.. huge birds ! Huge !
& even moreso ‘on the wing ! A Rare Sight ! Stunning !
PS - I prefer ‘Intermediates - not Mountain Bikes or Road Bikes
Want ‘more rubber than ‘skinny tires & certainly. not full on knobbies
Am a ‘rugged urban rider - go anywhere - any surface
Would take the same bike to Banff
