Here in Georgia, I believe, they call them fox squirrels because of their red color, along with some gray and red with some flying squirrels thrown in for good measure. I think they are fox and gray living in my trees around the house. They do have a fondness for cherry tomatoes so I will always raise some in a big tub next to the garden as a tribute and they will live the bigger ones alone. Now if I can just get them to share the pecans.
I was watching two squirrels in the park yesterday on my way home. We have grey squirrels. But I have noticed their little faces are reddish. They are not red squirrels but the hair of their little faces has a reddish tinge. The low sun was shining through their fluffy soft grey tails. One did a leap from the ground onto a low hanging branch but at least six feet up,from a standing start,never saw that before. One agile squirrel.
I picture Edgar Winter and Wilson's great migration west, packed up like those Saturday morning cartoon hobos. Just a polka-dot bindle full of acorns and big dreams. Pure poetry, Kent.
The squirrels in my yard get plenty of food from the neighbors so they leave the bird feeder alone. Same with our tomato plants. So we get along and occasionally I'll toss them something. They're busy and fun to watch. When I had a cat, he cornered one by a high fence and I blocked him from killing it, until the little guy could escape. I felt it was good for them to get chased, because we have foxes, and they need the practice. But everyone gets fed and no one has to die here.
