My students would love these crab stamps! I also learned that hermit crabs like humans can be right-handed or left-handed and that dominant claw acts like their “front door” when they retreat into their shells and want to seal it shut. 😊

Where I live— in the Caribbean, where these kinds of crabs are very common— we call them “soldiers” or “soldier crabs” because of how carefully they coordinate their behavior, lining up in phalanxes to exchange shells. No one would think to accuse them of being “hermits.”

You might enjoy the love story about a lobster named Herman and a crab named Sally, sung by the Smothers Brothers. It's called "Crabs Walk Sideways but Lobsters Walk Straight" and can be found on YouTube.

Thanks for this. I saw plenty of hermit crabs when I was living on the coast but knew nothing about them. Now I know a little more.

"[...] hermit crabs are much better off in the wild and we shouldn't be keeping them as pets"

This is probably true for most animals -- and maybe some people too!

I bet you're right about the hermit crabs, Kent (both that they're better off in the wild and not kept as pets, and also that they're probably not hermit-y or crabby)!

And I absolutely LOVE the sweet happy crab stamps!!!🦀❤️ I hope you'll have them having a conversation about something soon!🥰
